Meghan pays her respects to Uyinene Mrwetyana

On Thursday, the Duchess of Sussex made a private visit to the site where 19-year-old Cape Town student Uyinene Mrwetyana was murdered last month, to pay her respects and to show solidarity with those who have taken a stand against gender based violence and femicide.

It always feels uncomfortable to discuss clothing for such sombre visits, and I hope it does not offend people if I list Meghan's outfit in this post. Please understand this is a fashion blog and I have received countless requests for outfit details.

I do not take offence. This is your blog, Elizabeth. You do what you feel is right.

It is also a way to raise social awareness. It's all good.

I think Meghan is wonderful to visit the site and pay tribute.

I find this outfit entirely inappropriate for a Royal to wear to a memorial for the murder of a young girl.

I know that the visit was labeled "private", but the photo was then posted on the Sussex Instagram account by the Sussexes themselves, so it is a public visit.

The jeans and top are just ok, nothing more. A bit of the seventies vibe that is back in style this season. But she has so many other outfits that would have been more appropriate, even a white blouse with sleeves and black jeans if she wanted to keep it simple.

I have been puzzled by some of her choices o this tour, such as the sundress to meet the High Commissioner late in the day, but a black jumpsuit with dangling earrings and stilettos to meet with HIV positive mothers and their children.

Both nice outfits, but neither seemed appropriate to the occasion.

Louise I respectfully disagree. It was a young woman that was murdered and I think Meghan's outfit was youthful, perhaps it was her way of trying to connect.

Sometimes clothes are just clothes. I think that Meghan seems to be a compassionate and thoughtful person but maybe her focus was on the visit and the occasion and not on what she was wearing? I feel exhausted by the pressure on her to wear the ‘right’ clothes and to say and do the ‘right’ thing.

Tara: This is a form to discuss the clothing that she wears. That's what we do here.. discuss her clothes.

Tara, I agree. Some of these complaints are just excessive. Meghan’s outfit is perfectly fine for the occasion.

Louise, I agree with you. Meghan seems to excel at not always dressing appropriate for the occasion. I commend her for making this visit. I understand this was not an "official" event. I realize that she was honouring a young woman. Still, respect is called for. Meghan's outfit is flippant and beyond casual. As you say, a plain white blouse with sleeves would have solved the problem.

I agree Louise. Way too casual.

I generally like this outfit and would wear it to go sightseeing on vacation. I do think it is inappropriate for this occasion only because she very obviously had a photographer follow her around and then posted pictures. She is in a role..and this to me is just too casual.

I agree this is too casual for the occasion and better suited to vacation. I also find it a bit too young for her, more appropriate for women in their teens and 20s than for a woman nearly 40.

Her hair is so beautiful and shiny here. I think the feminine, casual top and jeans are completely appropriate for this unofficial yet photographed visit. She is a young woman representing all women, and she looks so much like herself in this picture. More awareness world wide about femicide will result from this and more people may be able to relate to her when she’s dressed down.

I do not think it was 'not appropriate'. I think that she was trying to lighten up the vibe. Just like I would have wanted to too.
As far as fashion, I love the outfit for any casual occasion

I think this outfit was perfect. Not every memorial has to be somber and dark. I wouldn't want people to remember me and dress in formal morning, I'd prefer light and cheery bc that's how I lived.

So true Crystal!! Why go there looking heavy and somber. It is about the young girl not the Dutchess showing up in over the top outfil.
